Southern Africa Civil Society Renewable Energy Recommendations to SADC Leaders: SADC SUMMIT

As Heads of State gather for the 45th Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit, civil society organizations from across the sub-region are calling on leaders to urgently shift the region’s energy agenda. A newly released statement by the Southern Africa Region Climate Action Network (SARCAN) outlines a bold set of demands to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and energy efficiency across the sub-region

The key summary recommendations shared with Madagascar are as follows:

  1. Promote renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency across the region
  2. Adopt a human rights-based approach to ensure equitable access to clean energy
  3. Accelerate public education and awareness campaigns on clean energy
  4. Strengthen partnerships for technology transfer and collaboration
  5. Fully implement the region’s Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Strategy and Action Plan (REEESAP)
  6. Mobilize greater investment in renewable energy projects 
  7. Commit to universal energy access for the benefit of the energy poor
