COP 29, the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, is scheduled to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11-22, 2024.

Key areas of focus at COP 29 include:

Climate Finance: The conference will aim to secure new commitments for climate finance, particularly for adaptation and loss and damage. African countries are expected to push for increased funding to address the disproportionate impacts of climate change they face.

Just Transition: Discussions will focus on ensuring a just transition to low-carbon economies, particularly for developing countries and vulnerable communities.

Global Stocktake: COP 29 will assess collective progress towards achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Article 6: Negotiations will continue on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which deals with carbon markets and cooperation between countries.

Africa’s Priorities:

Increased Climate Finance: African countries will continue to advocate for increased climate finance to support adaptation, mitigation, and loss and damage.

Technology Transfer: They will also seek to facilitate the transfer of climate-friendly technologies to help them transition to low-carbon economies.

Just Transition: Africa will emphasize the need for a just transition that considers its unique circumstances and avoids exacerbating existing inequalities.

Loss and Damage: The continent will press for concrete measures to address loss and damage, which disproportionately affects its vulnerable populations.

Overall, COP 29 is expected to be a crucial moment for global climate action. The outcomes of the conference will have significant implications for Africa, which is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
